Anti-Cancer Supplements

When dealing with cancer, things can seem out of control. However, you can take steps to help mitigate symptoms, reduce the risk of your cancer spreading, and even prevent cancer from happening in the first place.

It’s essential to note that no dietary supplement can entirely prevent, treat, or cure cancer. Yet, some supplements may help prevent cancer and assist in your cancer recovery.

Keep reading to learn which supplements you can take to help fight cancer.

Ground Flax Seed

To enhance their omega-3s, most people use fish oil supplements. Unfortunately, in one animal study on mice, fish oil was found to possibly reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Luckily, ground flax seed is an excellent alternative.

Avoid flax seed oil because it lacks the same nutrients as ground flax seed.

Ground flax seed is rich in lignans, which are plant compounds researchers have studied for their potent cancer-fighting properties. Ground flax seed contains between 75 and 800 more lignans than other plant foods.

Some studies have associated ground flax seed intake with a lower risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women.

Animal test-tube studies have also shown flaxseed to protect against colorectalskinblood, and lung cancer.

Garlic

You should eat at least one clove of garlic a day or 300 to 1,000 mg of garlic extract to experience some of the health benefits of garlic.

Garlic contains a combination of about 20 phytochemicals with antioxidant and antibacterial properties, plus a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

Research suggests that regularly eating garlic may accelerate the process of repairing damaged DNA and reduce the risk of several cancers, including stomach, colon, pancreatic, and breast cancer.

Ginger

Many people use ginger, a natural product, as a spice and medicine for treating nausea, dysentery, heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea, loss of appetite, infections, cough, and bronchitis.

Ginger’s role in helping cancer patients is due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties. However, it’s crucial that you avoid consuming excessive amounts of ginger, as it may interact with blood thinners and affect some people’s blood sugar levels.

The ginger root contains compounds that may help relieve or prevent nausea and vomiting. These substances increase the flow of saliva and digestive juices and may help calm the stomach and intestines.

Some studies have found that ginger may help nausea caused by chemotherapy. However, more extensive studies are needed to confirm these anti-nausea effects.

Vitamin D

Studies have found that people with cancer often have lower circulating vitamin D levels in their blood, yet, research is mixed.

A 2009 study found that vitamin D deficiency was more common among women diagnosed with breast cancer. It also found that vitamin D deficiency may raise the risk of breast cancer spreading and death from breast cancer.

However, a large National Cancer Institute study found no association between vitamin D blood levels and cancer death, except for colorectal cancer. People with high levels of vitamin D were 72% less likely than those with low levels to die of colorectal cancer.

Green Tea

Green tea contains substances called polyphenols that are believed to have potent anti-cancer properties.

Cancerous tumors rely on fast-growing networks of blood vessels to sustain their rapid growth rate. Green tea compounds may possess the ability to help slow or prevent this rapid growth.

It’s recommended that you use green tea extract, as you would need to consume 10 to 12 cups of green tea each day to obtain the cancer-fighting benefits.

One study of women with ovarian cancer found that women who drank green tea were more likely to survive three years after an ovarian cancer diagnosis than women who didn’t drink green tea.
